Cancer-Focused Research

Mamoudou, a Mali-trained MD with a sandwich PhD from Johns Hopkins University and Mali, currently holds the position of Research Associate Professor in the NU Biomedical Engineering Department. In this role, he serves as the Director of Translational Research for the Center for Innovation in Global Health Technologies (CIGHT). Additionally, he has a secondary appointment in the NU Department of Preventive Medicine (DPM), specializing in the Epidemiology of Infection-associated Cancers and preventive strategies. Mamoudou is also the Associate Director of the Havey IGH Center for Global Oncology. Alongside these roles, he holds a joint appointment as a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Science, Techniques, and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB) in Mali. Driven by foundational research training in infectious disease and microbiology, Mamoudou is deeply interested in the intersection of cancer and infectious diseases. With a focus on Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), he conducts culturally and contextually oriented cancer research, addressing locally relevant questions with significant public health impact. His primary goal is to decipher molecular mechanisms, identify biomarkers, and develop and implement novel preventive strategies with new early diagnostic tools. In 2019, Mamoudou played a crucial role in establishing Mali's first cancer-oriented center, the Centre de Recherche et de Formation sur les pathologies moléculaires (CREFPAM, Research and Training Center on Molecular Pathologies). Collaborating with NU colleagues and partners, he secured funding for Mali's inaugural cancer research training program (D43CA260658) from NCI. Furthermore, he led the acquisition of the first funding for an implementation science program on cervical cancer (U01CA275129), serving as the Multiple Principal Investigator (MPI) for both projects. Over the past 17 years, Mamoudou has actively engaged in extensive collaborations on major projects related to infectious diseases and infection-associated cancer across Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Liberia and South Africa.
