I am Chief of Rheumatology and Director of the Lurie Cancer Center Flow Cytometry Core Facility. I have over 23 years of experience using flow cytometry and have published over 30 related manuscripts on which I am either first author or corresponding author. My expertise in flow cytometry is in apoptosis, cell cycle, and antigen presenting cells in humans and mice. Since becoming Director of the LCC Flow Core Facility two years ago, I helped acquire 2 FACS Aria Cell Sorters, purchased a FACS Melody, and upgraded the two current FACS Aria Cell sorters. In addition, one of the two Fortessas' was upgraded to a Symphony. The most dramatic change was becoming a 24/7 facility which allows investigators to utilize instruments at all hours of the day. This helped increase the amount of usage by over 40%. Prior to joining Northwestern University, I was the Director of the Saint Louis University (SLU) Flow Cytometry Core facility. At SLU, the Flow Cytometry Core Facility is the only flow cytometry core unit that serves basic science and clinical related research. Under my directorship, the SLU Flow Cytometry Core Facility underwent extensive reorganization and upgrading of the instruments. The success of the facility resulted in further expansion and awards from Midwest Regional Center for Excellence for Biodefense (MRCE) to purchase a FACSAria high speed cell sorter and an LSRII analyzer. Additional improvements with institutional support included a Luminex multi-cytokine analyzer, an AutoMacs cell purifier and a Cedex automated cell counter. Altogether these improvements established the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at SLU as one of the premier Flow Cytometry Facilities in the country and generated almost a 7-fold increase in income. I will bring this experience to my current position, and continue to make similar improvements to the LCC Core as new technologies become available.
