Frequently Asked Questions

  • What time does the celebration begin?
On-site registration and t-shirt pick up begins in Grant Park at 7:30 a.m., and the celebration gets underway at the same time. The registration fee is higher on event day (and may not be available for the 5K). Why not register online now?
  • Is the 5K timed?
Yes. The 5K is chip-timed. All chips are assigned to bib numbers for the race. Dri-fit shirts and numbers can be picked up on Northwestern's Chicago Campus in the Arkes Family Pavilion on May 29 or May 30 (Click here for details) or on event day starting at 7:30 a.m.
  • How long is the Walk route?
The Walk is about three miles, but you can walk any distance you'd like and return to Grant Park whenever you choose to. The Walk is not timed, so enjoy the beautiful lakefront path at your own pace.
  • Can I register in person?
We encourage everyone to register online, but you can also register in person for the Walk the week before the event at the locations and times listed here. Walk Day registration will be available starting at 7:30 a.m. Please note that space is limited for the 5K Run, and online registration is highly recommended. Registration for the 5K will only be available on event day if space is available.
  • Should I bring my children?
Definitely! This is a family celebration. Registration is free (but required) for children under 2 years old. Note that strollers are welcome for the Walk, but are not permitted for the 5K Run.
  • Are dogs permitted?
Dogs are discouraged because of the large number of people. If you do bring your dog, it must be on a leash at all times. Note that dogs are not permitted for the 5K Run.
  • Where should I park?
We recommend the Grant Park South Garage (no discount available) and Northwestern Memorial Hospital Huron/St.Clair Parking Garage (discount available). Free shuttles run between each garage and the event site from 6:00 am until 11:30 am. More Parking Information.
  • What time does the event end?
The celebration is over at about 11 a.m., following the cancer survivors' group photo. We will post a complete schedule of events in May.
  • Who can take part in the Cancer Survivors' Celebration & Walk?
Everyone whose life has been touched by cancer, regardless of where they were treated.
  • What if it rains?
The event is held rain or shine...we're counting on shine!
  • What are the t-shirt sizes?
Options for Walk t-shirt sizes are youth medium, adult small, adult large, adult XL and adult XXL. The t-shirts have a new design each year, created especially for the Cancer Survivors' Celebration & Walk. 5K runners will receive a special dry-fit shirt and may purchase a regular Walk shirt at the Souvenir Tent on Walk Day.
  • Why do only cancer survivors wear purple t-shirts?
The purple t-shirts make it easy to recognize and honor the cancer survivors.
  • What if I have more questions?

The Lurie Cancer Center supports the following definition from the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship:

"from the moment of diagnosis through the balance of life, an individual diagnosed with cancer is a survivor. Family members, friends, and caregivers are also impacted by the survivorship experience and are therefore included in this definition."
