Genistein Mediated Regulation of Prostate Cell Adhesion

Raymond Bergan, MD and William Catalona, MD

Dr. Catalona and I are physicians at Northwestern University, and we are testing a drug that may eventually be proven to be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer. We are looking for volunteers for this research study. To participate you must meet the following criteria: have prostate cancer, plan to have your prostate surgically removed, have a PSA less than 20, and have a Gleason's score of between 5 and 8. The study is supported by the National Cancer Institute, and they are providing the drug free of charge. The drug is called genistein, and it is found in soy beans. People who eat soy appear to get less prostate cancer. Laboratory studies suggest that genistein has anticancer properties, and may be a useful therapy. While many men with prostate cancer are taking genistein because they think it will help them, it is important to know that genistein has never been rigorously tested for its activity in men with prostate cancer. Just because a drug works in the lab, it does not mean that it will work in people. The only way to know whether genistein is an effective anticancer drug is to test it in rigorous clinical trials. We want to find out if genistein is working, or not, in men who have prostate cancer. The study is taking place at Northwestern University, in Chicago, Illinois. Therefore, to participate in the study, you will need to seen by me in the clinic at Northwestern. However, you can still have your surgery close to your home. If you are interested in the study, have any questions, or want more information, please call me at: 312-908-5284. I will return your call as soon as I can.
