Cancer-Focused Research:

Dr. Bilimoria is a surgical oncologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is the Vice Chair for Quality in the Department of Surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University/

Dr. Bilimoria is also Director of the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Research Center at Northwestern which focuses predominatly on surgical oncology. His research has focused on examining and improving the delivery and quality of healthcare for surgical and oncology patients. He is a Faculty Scholar at the American College of Surgeons.

He has published more than 170 scientific articles in journals such as JAMA, Medical Care, Health Services Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Annals of Surgery, and many others. Dr. Bilimoria’s research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the American Cancer Society, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the California Health Care Foundation, the Health Care Services Corporation, and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

Dr. Bilimoria is the Director of the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center of Northwestern University (SOQIC), a center focused on national, regional, and local quality improvement research and practical initiatives. Dr. Bilimoria’s research agenda focuses on improving healthcare quality and delivery by (1) developing better ways to provide hospitals with comparative data, (2) providing hospitals with the tools use their data to undertake internal hospital quality improvement efforts, (3) providing patients with better comparative data through public reporting which can assist them in selecting the best hospital for their surgical care, and (4) performing evaluations of policies that impact the healthcare quality. He has a particular interest in large, pragmatic cluster-randomized trials examining hospital quality initiatives and healthcare policies. He is the Director of the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC) and Principal Investigator of the FIRST Trial, and he is a Faculty Scholar at the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Bilimoria obtained his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He obtained his Master’s degree in outcomes research from Northwestern. Dr. Bilimoria was a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health and then at the American College of Surgeons. He completed his General Surgery residency training at Northwestern and then went on to a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
