Lurie Cancer Center Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program

Lurie Cancer Center Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program

The Lurie Cancer Center's multidisciplinary melanoma program is directed by Jeffrey Sosman, MD.  The Melanoma Program has parallel clinic times for the Dermatology Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Clinic (staffed by Pedram Gerami, MD – who is the Director of the Melanoma Clinic in Dermatology – Alan Zou, MD, and Jennifer Choi, MD), Melanoma Surgery Clinic (staffed by Jeffrey Wayne, MD, and Karl Bilimoria, MD) and the Medical Oncology Clinic (staffed by Sunandana Chandra, MD and Jeffrey Sosman, MD). Additional subspecialists are consulted as needed, and the Lurie Cancer Center's comprehensive Supportive Oncology Program is available to patients and their families.

By holding these clinics at the same time, the Lurie Cancer Center melanoma team is able to collaborate with ease and communicate seamlessly with other specialists; providing their patients at any stage of disease with a comprehensive treatment plan. A Multidisciplinary Tumor Board meets monthly to review new or complicated cases, ensuring that melanoma patients get a thorough assessment of their treatment options.

The care of cutaneous melanoma patients and individuals with clinical atypical nevi (moles) is primarily managed in the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Clinic. This clinic was developed to follow patients at increased risk of melanoma based on mole pattern and family history, as well as to provide an initial evaluation and ongoing surveillance for patients with cutaneous (skin) and more advanced melanoma.

The Lurie Cancer Center Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Clinic uses digital mole mapping to assist in early detection of severely atypical moles and cutaneous melanoma. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive patient education about sun protection and awareness of skin changes to aid in the early detection of lesions.
