Northwestern Skin Cancer Institute

DermPath Second Opinion Service

Northwestern Medicine's Department of Dermatology has specially trained dermatopathologists, experts in both dermatology and pathology. Our dermatopathologists combine expertise in clinical, histologic and molecular diagnosis of skin disease to make the best integrative diagnosis. This specialty provides for the diagnosis and classification of all types of skin cancers using both standard microscopic examination and advanced molecular tests particularly for melanomas and lymphomas. Pedram Gerami, MD, and Joan Guitart, MD, are leaders in the use of molecular tests to supplement and improve diagnosis of skin cancers. The information these tests provide help clinicians choose the most effective treatment method for their patients. Northwestern provides second opinion evaluation of tissue samples submitted by physicians, pathologists and patients.

The Department of Dermatology offers timely second opinions by leading experts without requiring you to spend time and money traveling. Northwestern's Medical Faculty Foundation will bill the patients' insurance company directly and the patient will be responsible for their share of the cost. Most insurance carriers will reimburse the costs of second opinion consultations. Please note that this service is for pathology second opinions only.

Northwestern may request relevant information from your medical records in addition to the slide(s) , a records release form, HIPPA privacy statements, and some information about you. Please complete all of the information to prevent delays in the processing of your second opinion.

To schedule a Second Opinion Pathology reading, please contact the Department of Dermatology at 312.695.1413.
