Innovative Studies in Cancer
The Lefkofsky Family Foundation of Chicago recently pledged to create the Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Innovation Research Awards at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. These awards will help to support promising Lurie Cancer Center investigators as they develop a research track record that will lead to National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for their basic, translational, and clinical cancer studies, raising the bar for scientific discovery by rewarding ingenuity.
"This support from Liz and Eric Lefkofsky will be integral in our efforts to develop novel research and top talent. It will have a major impact," said Leonidas C. Platanias, MD, PhD, Jesse, Sara, Andrew, Abigail, Benjamin, and Elizabeth Lurie Professor of Oncology and interim director of the Lurie Cancer Center. "We are truly grateful for the confidence and generosity that the Lefkofsky Family Foundation is investing in the Lurie Cancer Center with these competitive research grants."
Crucial Funds to Propel Novel Studies
Thanks to this impactful gift from the Lefkofsky Family Foundation, forward-looking scientists at the Lurie Cancer Center will have the opportunity to compete for "idea" or seed grants, providing them with the resources and protected time needed to push the envelope of cancer-related research.
Philanthropy is more crucial than ever as funding awards from the NIH continue to dwindle. It is projected that only 1 out of 10 research grant applications to the NIH will be funded in the future. The loss of significant and dependable grants has a direct and negative impact on new and senior researchers alike.
"The lack of early-stage funding is a prevalent and difficult obstacle for promising treatments," said Liz Lefkofsky. "Researchers at the Lurie Cancer Center are doing revolutionary work to eradicate a cruel disease that has affected everyone in some way. With these grants, we will ensure more potentially life-saving ideas get the development and investment they critically need."
Partnering in Medicine
The Lefkofsky Family Foundation was established in 2006 by Liz and Eric Lefkofsky, and serves to advance high-impact programs, initiatives, and research that enhance the quality of human life in our community. One of its missions is to propel innovative medical research, which aligns directly with Northwestern Medicine's vision to transform healthcare.
