Friend Family

The Friend Foundation, comprised of Linda and Bill Friend, Pam and Joe Szokol, and Leslie and Scott Friend, was established to honor John G. Friend. The family's philanthropic contributions to the Lurie Cancer Center support the research efforts of Dr. William Catalona, professor and director of the Familial Prostate Cancer Screening Program. In addition to his work providing state-of-the-art clinical tests and diagnoses for men with family histories of prostate cancer, Dr. Catalona is investigating new treatment options to prevent and inhibit the metastatic spread of prostate cancer.

Longtime supporters of Dr. Rosen and the Lurie Cancer Center, the family advances prostate cancer research through their annual giving. Through the Friend Foundation, the family also has made substantial contributions to establish the Abby and John Friend Professorship of Oncology Research, which currently is held by Dr. Leo I. Gordon in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. The Friend Professorship was created in memory of Pam, Bill, and Scott's father, John G. Friend, and in honor of their father's attending oncologist Dr. Merrill Kies, Dr. Rosen, and the staff of the Lurie Cancer Center.

"Although our father passed away on October 2, 1992; in some ways it seems like a blink ago, in others a lifetime. We continue to be quite certain that he would be smiling (and perhaps tipping one of his many hats), knowing that the support we provide will be put to great use under Dr. Rosen's direction and supervision, and by the distinguished efforts of the entire Lurie Cancer Center staff in the fight against cancer and in helping families."

-Bill Friend, President of the Friend Foundation

"Bill's many years of support for the Lurie Cancer Center have meant a great deal to me. His philanthropic leadership and foresight have advanced our clinical research, and his dedication to improving the early detection of prostate cancer has improved the health of cancer patients everywhere."

- Steven T. Rosen, MD, FACP, Genevieve E. Teuton Professor of Medicine and Director of the Lurie Cancer Center
