20th Annual Cancer Survivors Celebration & Walk and New 5K: a Celebration to Remember!

The wind and rain was no match for the spirits of close to 4,000 cancer survivors & supporters who gathered in Grant Park to walk, run and celebrate on National Cancer Survivors Day!

Oncologist Mark Agulnik, MD, the first to register for the Lurie Cancer Center’s first 5K, welcomed the group and started the race, along with his patient and fellow runner, Molly Akers. The returning runners were exuberant, and their times speak for themselves. Check out the race results here.

The 20th anniversary of the Lurie Cancer Center's signature event was a celebration to remember. We're grateful to cancer survivor Heather Schumacher, as well as Ann Lurie and Lurie Cancer Center Director Steve Rosen, MD, for getting the morning off to a great start. "20 years and so much progress, it's quite amazing. Yet we have many challenges and we recognize them," Dr. Rosen observed. "The goal is that every year we have more and more survivors."

The crowd stayed warm until the end, "twisting out cancer" with Jenna Benn Shersher and dancing along with special guest Bonnie Hunt, who attended with 15 family members. "You’re all making an investment in your own Karma by being here today," Hunt told the crowd. "I think we all know what it's like. . . to hear the words, or to have someone in your family hear the words--you have cancer. The next sentence has to be 'but there’s something we can do about it.' We all want that hope."
